How I met Al Gore

He was in our little college town for the first Clinton-Gore election campaign. Space was severely limited, so hundreds of us along with the paparrazzi-like press waited in the lobby. He came out and though I was knocked around by burly cameramen who obviously had man-crushes on him, I stuck my hand out and got a quick hand-pump from him before being knocked out of the way by the Gore-crazed media pack.

How I met Douglas Adams

I “met” Douglas Adams at a reading and book-signing in a bookstore. I was just in the audience and was able to get a copy of my “Hitchhiker’s Guide” tome signed by him. He was late for the event due to dealing with severe back pains and maybe even a late air-flight. Despite that hiccup, he was as entertaining and witty in person as he is in writing.

Why I want to meet Barack Obama

At the moment, my reasoning for wanting to meet Barack Obama would be to advise him to not respond to every (personal) attack aimed at him. He can’t please everyone and he shouldn’t try.

Why I admire Bill Nye

You’ve gotta admire someone who can make science so much fun. He sees science as a social equalizer, unlike my old high school and college professors who definitely had prejudices about which students were “worthy” of science.

Makes me think, why can’t scientists (or at least Bill Nye and others like him) be seen on the same level as rock stars?

Why I admire Dean Kamen

I first heard of Dean Kamen when his mysterious “Ginger” project was generating buzz. It was said to be revolutionary and a social catalyst. That really got my curiousity going. Then the segway was revealed and I was blown away by its simplicity in exterior design and intent.

Then I saw him with Isabella Rosselini on a cable show called Ikonoclasts. He talked more about his attempts to solve problems that we (currently) take for granted, such as lack of clean water in developing countries.

A question people often ask about me

Once people find out that I’m not from the bay area, 99.99% of the time they ask: “So what do you think of San Francisco”? Let’s just say the jury’s still out on that one.

It’s one of the most diverse cities I’ve lived in, not THE, but one of the most. And still people manage to be intolerant and condescending of each other, at the same time wanting to believe himself more open-minded than anyone else. Too many people here believe they are better than the rest of the country, not seeing they’re just like those they complain about.

This question comes from arrogance, smugness and low self-esteem.
